FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A priest’s amice is a rectangular piece of white linen, traditionally worn as part of the liturgical vestments. It has two long ribbons attached to it and is usually worn around the neck and shoulders, beneath the alb. The amice serves both functional and symbolic roles in the celebration of the Mass, especially in the Roman Catholic Church and some Anglican and Lutheran traditions.
The word “amice” is derived from the Latin term amictus, which means “a covering” or “something wrapped around.” This meaning reflects how the vestment is used — wrapped around the priest’s shoulders and neck as a foundational garment before other vestments are put on.
The amice has both a practical and symbolic function. Practically, it protects the outer vestments from sweat and wear, particularly around the neck and shoulders. Symbolically, it represents the “helmet of salvation” mentioned in the Bible (Ephesians 6:17) and serves as a spiritual reminder for the priest to guard his thoughts, words, and actions during the liturgy.
The amice is primarily worn by clergy priests and bishops during the celebration of the Mass. In some cases, deacons may also wear the amice when participating in solemn liturgical services. While it is more commonly used in traditional or formal liturgies, its use varies by denomination and liturgical preference.
In the Roman Catholic Church, priests are typically required to remain celibate and do not marry, so they do not have wives. However, in the Eastern Orthodox Church and some Eastern Catholic Churches, married men may be ordained as priests. In those traditions, the priest’s wife is given a title of respect, such as Presbytera (Greek), Matushka (Russian), Khouria (Arabic), or simply referred to as “the priest’s wife” in English.
