A Red Cassock for Bold Choir Dress
Righteous Cardinal pairs a vivid red cassock with the option of a white surplice, a plain red tippet and a red band cincture, so you can build a complete red choir-dress look in one order. Our photographs cover the outfit from three angles, then the cassock alone: the Roman cut closed with a fringed red cincture, and the Anglican cut with its smooth double-breasted front.
Inside the Price
The $189.99 price is for the red cassock in your chosen style. The rest is optional:
- A white surplice in plain or lace
- A plain red tippet in tropical suiting
- A red band cincture, fringed or plain
- A zucchetto, biretta or Canterbury cap
Each add-on shows its own price in the menu: the surplice is $99.99 or $109.99, the tippet $34.99, the cincture $49.99 or $59.99, and the caps $24.99 to $39.99.
Cassock Construction
The listing’s construction notes include shoulder pads, partial lining as far as the waist, three rear pleats for movement, and side slits. We cut it in tropical suiting so the red holds its shape and color through a long procession, and the optional surplice is made of white poly cotton.
When Red Is Worn
The Roman calendar uses red at Pentecost, on Palm Sunday and Good Friday, and for apostles and martyrs. Outside that calendar, churches use red cassocks for cathedral clergy, choirs and particular offices. Some Pentecostal and independent churches dress clergy in red for Pentecost and revivals. Follow your own church’s custom.
Fit
Cassock sizes run 38 through 58, each offered Short, Regular or Long. A made-to-measure cassock costs $30 extra and uses the height, back length and chest measurements you enter.
Wearing Red with White
Pairing red with a white surplice gives one of the strongest contrasts in choir dress, which is why the combination reads so well in processions and from the back of a large church. The decorative bands on the surplice shown here pick up a little grey at the cuffs and hem, softening the edge between the two colors.
Other Ways to Wear Red
For a red cassock under a full alb with a rope cincture, see the Red Clergy Vestment. The surplice set also comes in black, royal blue and red purple.
